Book review: The Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

The Wicked Lovely is about a teen girl, Aislinn, who has had the ability to see faeries, invisible to mortals without the Sight, ever since she was born. Even though there are rules about never to stare, speak or attract attention to the fay, there is one particular faery boy, Keenan, who becomes interested in Aislinn. However, Keenan is the Summer King and believes that Aislinn is his Summer Queen, and is determined to make sure that Aislinn will be the Queen, no matter what.

As the concept seems very fantasy almost fairy tale with the faeries, Marr does an excellent job at portraying this new type of fay. There are some fay which are beautiful to a degree, but the majority of them have been described are very unappealing with tusks, eyes that were far too large for their faces, lions’ manes… the list goes on. The first ten or so chapters of the book is basically setting up the story and also character development on those who play an important role in the story. It started off a little slow, but with the characters changing, the world of the fay, as well as the writing style, definitely makes the story very fascinating.

The story is one of the most unique plots I have ever read, especially for books that are in the fantasy genre, as I never read a book with faeries in it. Aislinn has always had to pretend to never acknowledge the fay since she was born, even when they grope, trip and pinch people who do not have the Sight to see them. Then she has to deal with Keenan, who is believes that Aislinn is the Summer Queen, when he enrols at her school. Along with the plot, the creativity of the rules for finding the correct Summer Queen is fascinating, and even the little quotes before each chapter about the fay impressed me.

I was very surprised when I realised that the book was aimed for an audience that is aged thirteen and older. I’m not sure if it is because I read books which target an older audience, but it seems like it should be intended for young adults. For example, there is a scene which mentions that a sex scene took place, and I personally don’t think thirteen year olds should be reading books with acknowledgement of sex. It was a sweet scene, well the build-up to the scene was sweet, but I don’t think thirteen year olds should be reading about sex at that age.

Overall, The Wicked Lovely was an excellent book to read and would definitely recommend it to someone who enjoys the fantasy genre or anyone wanting to get away from the highly popular, vampire books. I believe that this isn’t a book for everyone, especially those who aren’t fans for fantasy or faeries, but the story is very unique and stands out from the other books I’ve read. I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Things I Love Thursday

This is amazing ♥

I believe it is important to remember the good things in life, when you are feeling down ♥

During my trip to Canberra for the first time in 4 years, I always felt really happy whenever I walked into a bookstore ♥

I finished reading The Hobbit on January 10 and loved it so much!  I cannot wait for the movie to come out this year ♥

Bridesmaids is one of the most hilarious films I’ve seen.  If you haven’t seen it yet, I definitely recommend that you go rent it ♥

Daily Lives of High School Boys is a new anime that aired on January 10 and is incredibly hilarious.  I’ve watched a lot of anime and this is definitely one of the most hilarious ones yet and would recommend it to anyone ♥

Hart of Dixie has only just aired in Australia, so I decided to watch the pilot episode.  I love Rachel Bilson ever since The O.C., so there is no way that I am missing this show.  It is really enjoyable and look forward to the future episodes ♥

2012: New Year. New Me. New Blog.

I'm always looking through blogs and wishing I had my own blog for where I can post my thoughts, interests and whatever else is on my mind. I’ve had blogs in the past but never committed myself to updating them everyday, so I hope to change that this year. 2012 is going to be the year where I will hopefully be more open to others, read a hundred books and start the journey for getting my dream job (which is becoming a librarian).
